Why Organic Beauty Products Are Not a Luxury But a Necessity for Those With Chronic Illness

Have you ever been concerned about the chronic health or autoimmunity risks of conventional cosmetics? You should be, because according to many studies, most conventional beauty products are loaded with harsh chemicals that could trigger a series of health problems–and if you are living with an autoimmune disorder or other chronic health issues, exposure to these chemicals can actually make your chronic condition worse!

The Poisonous Chemicals Contained in Your Beauty Products

There are more than five types of chemicals that have been found to cause long-term health problems for those with and without chronic illness.

These chemicals include:

  • Parabens

Parabens are one of the most common chemicals used in cosmetics because of their antibacterial and preservative properties. They are frequently found in shampoo, conditioners, sun tanners, shaving gels, personal lubricants, toothpaste, and some moisturizers.

Research suggests that parabens may disturb normal hormonal secretion and function and increase the risk of hormonal related disorders (e.g., breast cancer). A few studies have also found that parabens may cause photosensitivity and increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

  • Phthalates

Phthalates are plastic chemical compounds that are used as stabilizers and emulsifying agents in dyes and detergents, and in beauty products like nail polish, eye shadow, mascara, moisturizers, and hair sprays. Based on various studies, phthalates have been linked to hormonal disturbances, decreased fertility, obesity, and low immunity.

  • Artificial Colors

Artificial pigments used in makeup items such as nail polish, eye shadow, blushes, and mascaras come from petroleum, and specifically coal tar. They are considered, based on scientific trials, to be potential carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) and disruptors of regular hormonal activity.

  • Triclosan

Triclosan is a potent antibacterial chemical that is often used in skin soaps and liquid cleansers, toothpaste, and deodorants. This chemical has been linked with major skin irritation and allergic reactions as well as hormonal imbalance, as it may interfere with normal thyroid activity.

  • SLS

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a surfactant compound that acts as a foaming agent in skin washes/cleansers, shampoo, shower gels, and some toothpaste. SLS is a proven skin irritant and has the power to interact with other chemicals and disturb normal hormonal activity as well as liver and kidney function, which could lead to serious health problems and worsening of chronic illness symptoms.

Other types of chemicals that bear increased health risks are toluene (from coal tar) and formaldehyde (used as an antibacterial agent in body washes, soaps, shampoos, and skin cleansers).

If you live with a chronic illness, it’s especially important for you to be familiar with all ingredient labels in beauty products and avoid any product that contains the above dangerous chemicals.

These chemicals could not only aggravate your condition, but put you at risk for even more serious health problems in the future!

The Perfect Excuse to Pamper and Heal Your Skin

Ask anyone with an autoimmune disorder or other chronic illness, and they will quickly tell you that there is a shortage of positives to living with these conditions. However, living with a chronic illness is the perfect “excuse” (if you will) for better self -care.

Meaning, it is literally in the best interest of your health and your life to use green and organic beauty products because they don’t contain any of those chemicals, they are more natural and kind to your skin, and are more beneficial for our environment.

As long as you are looking in the right places and use formulas that match your skin type, your skin (and health) will thank you. In fact, choosing organic beauty products could be the best investment you’ve ever made for your skin and health!
