I Am Autistic, and This Is Ableism – [Video]

I’ve been a freelance writer for 7 years, and I LOVE my job. It’s one of the best things to ever happen to me.

Unfortunately, my disabilities often get in the way of my understanding what it is I need to do. I’m very open about my autism and that fact that I have a traumatic brain injury (TBI). If and when necessary, I disclose my condition, so that there are no large, frustrating gaps in communication.

Today, a client went too far. I misunderstood something, and these individuals know full well of my condition and have been accommodating thus far.

Then, they said this:

When these issues arise, you continue to allege there is a “miscommunication”, but when the same thing occurs repeatedly, it is not a miscommunication or a misunderstanding, but rather a lack of adherence to requirements.”

I immediately resigned, and I decided to share this vulnerable moment with a wide audience so people like me know they are not alone and people who have trouble understanding invisible illness have the chance to think before they speak.

I am a victim of nothing, but I will use this as an opportunity to be there for and educate others.
