Dealing With Your Disability Daily

When you have a disability, everyone will be curious; it‘s inevitable. People you know and people you don’t will want to know more, but not about you per se, they will want to know about the disability.

It is easy to become frustrated and angry about their curiosity, but you will get further if you learn how to deal with them in a kinder way. Although you are the one with a disability, you will also need to in most circumstances be the one who is patient and understanding.

By taking some steps to cope with your disability from a personal perspective, you will be more well-equipped to deal with the inquisitiveness of those around you.

  • Be Active

This is important for a few reasons. Aside from the obvious, that you will be more physically healthy, it is also a confidence booster. If you boost your confidence in yourself you will feel more pride for who you are, disability and all. It will also help you, if you choose a social sport setting, to make friends who understand what you are dealing with. Harvesting healthy relationships with others who have some or all of the same issues to deal with as you do will afford you an understanding friend. These friends may be able to help you answer the questions that you have about functioning in everyday life–including dealing with nosy Nelly’s.

  • Be the Bigger Person

You will most likely come face to face at some point with someone who is obnoxious, patronizing, or even outright insulting. Resist the urge to hurl hurtful comments back and realize that they have a disability as well…narrow-mindedness. With that in mind, practice patience and let them make themselves look bad, and they will.

  • Do What Can Be Done to Make Your Life Easier

Living with a disability can be a very stressful situation. One sure way to reduce your stress is to change what you can in order to alleviate some day to day issues. If you need help, ask family and friends, or check with your community to see what is offered in the way of independent living services. You just might be surprised at how much happier it makes you when there are a few less things to worry about.

  • Get a Hobby

Hobbies are another great way to boost your self-confidence and make you feel good about what you are able to do. There are a number of options, some may even make you money! You may want to consider painting, sculpting, jewelry making, kite making, building models or less conventional ideas like movie making, design, and programming. These are all things that could be considered a job if you wanted to go that route. When you see what you are capable of you will feel so good about yourself.

If you have a new disability and qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits, you should definitely apply. Alleviating the worry of where you will get money and how you will live will afford you some time to adjust and cope with your disability. You may apply for social security online and then get on with living.

When you have managed to deal with all the stages of grieving that will accompany the changes in your life, you will feel liberated. You need to learn and accept that you are good at things and still have talents, you also need to know that you are not alone. Once you have gotten to this point you will have a much easier time responding to peoples questions. Just remember, once their questions are out of the way there will be nothing stopping them from getting to know you as a person.
