Coconut oil is amazing. I can’t say enough about this stuff. I’ve been using coconut oil for everything lately. I started out using it medicinally for some ongoing gynecological issues. Then, I started using it as a skin cream and a hair conditioner. A friend of the family recently revealed he uses coconut oil for chronic joint pain. The stuff is truly incredible! Here is my list of top 10 uses for coconut oil.
1. May Prevent Cancer
Virgin coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids that are both anti-carcinogenic and anti-microbial. When breast and colon cancer were injected into rats during a study, the rats given coconut oil did not develop tumors. Due to its natural anti-bacterial properties, using coconut oil on your skin may also prevent the development of skin cancer.
2. Heals Acne
Despite what you may believe, skin that is too dry is just as susceptible to acne as oily skin. The high lauric acid in coconut oil kills the bacteria responsible for acne without irritating your skin like some store-bought acne creams.
3. Eases Pain and Inflammation
Joint and arthritis pain sufferers can find lasting relief by taking 3 tablespoons of coconut oil three times per day. The high level of antioxidants in this healing oil neutralizes the free radicals responsible for inflammation and chronic pain.
4. Treats Excessive Dry Skin
If you suffer from dry skin, you probably use an over-the-counter skin lotion. The problem with this, is not only are you actually making your dry skin worse, you’re setting yourself up for the development of cancer.
Most store-bought skin creams and lotions are chock full of carcinogens you’re better of staying away from. After my diagnosis of skin cancer back in 2007, I’ve been using natural lotions. I recently switched to virgin coconut oil and I love how soft and smooth my skin feels. Coconut oil can even heal cracked winter skin!
5. Moisturizes Dry Hair
My hair is curly so it’s pretty much always dry. Instead of using store-bought conditioner, I shampoo with castile soap and use coconut oil as a leave-in hair conditioner twice a week. It works so well!
6. Lightens Stretch Marks
Using coconut oil on your skin after pregnancy can lighten the appearance of stretch marks.
7. Treats Candida Infection
For women who suffer from chronic yeast infections or other vaginal infections that make sex uncomfortable, coconut oil is a miracle cure! Just taking one tablespoon by mouth before bed can help heal chronic yeast infections and soothe irritated genital tissues. You can also drink apple cider vinegar (with the mother) to treat mysterious vaginal pain and infection.
8. Encourages Weight Loss
Most weight-loss plans tell you that all fat is bad for you. Nothing could be further from the truth. To stay healthy, thin, and free of heart disease, you need to stay away from the trans fats found in fast and processed food. However, if you want to lose weight the healthy way, your body needs good fat. This includes coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, butter, and avocado.
9. Supports Your Immune System
If you’re an autoimmune disease sufferer or often find yourself getting every cold and flu that goes around, coconut oil can help strengthen your immune system. Its strong anti-viral properties fight viruses before they have a chance to take hold!
10. Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Forget those expensive anti-aging creams. All you need to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles is virgin coconut oil. Exfoliate your skin gently with a mixture of baking soda and water then rinse. Follow up by gently massaging ½ teaspoon of coconut oil over your face and neck. The high lauric acid content reduces inflammation, puffiness, and redness as well as lessening the look of crow’s feet.
Coconut Oil Contraindications
For most people, coconut oil is perfectly safe and healthy to use. However, anybody with an allergy to coconut should not use this oil. Coconut oil can also cause nausea and diarrhea in certain individuals. This can be due to your body cleansing itself of toxins. Also, if you’re already prone to diarrhea due to any type of gastrointestinal disease, it could worsen your symptoms. Start off with just one teaspoon every other day to see how it will affect you before increasing the “dosage”.
Also, if you’ve never tried coconut oil for cooking, it’s very healthy for you. It’s much better for you than vegetable oil and canola oil. Use it over a medium heat for sautéing and frying your favorite foods. Coconut oil may be a bit expensive but with so many amazing uses, it more than pays for itself in less than a month. You’ve got try it!
